16.4 Acting at the Scene of a Road Accident
Obligation to help
Road users must remain at the scene of an accident and assist, to the best of their abilities, any injured people and take part in any measures required.
Notification
Person who has been involved in a traffic accident has to state his or her name, address and give details about the accident if other person involved in that particular accident or someone who's property has been damaged so insists.
When someone has died or severely injured in an accident a person involved in the accident has to inform the police as soon as possible. The emergency telephone number is 112.
If property has been damaged and there is nobody at the scene who can receive information about the incident, a person who has been involved in the accident has to inform the owner of the property or police as soon as possible.
Order of actions:
Evaluate the situation.
What has happened, who needs immediate help.
Save anyone in mortal danger.
Danger of fire or drowning, etc.
Prevent additional collisions.
Warn other traffic. Place warning triangles in both directions at a sufficient distance from the accident scene (200-300 meters).
Get help, call 112.
Respond clearly to the questions; don't hang up the call before you get permission to do so.
112 Suomi – The 112 Suomi app enables the automatic delivery of the caller's location information to the emergency service dispatcher. The app has been created together with the Emergency Response Centre Administration who recommend it. It is available for download free of charge.
Immediate first aid.
Secure the patient's breathing and heartbeat. Stop severe bleeding.
Transporting the injured.
Resolve any remaining issues.
